WINCHESTER  — The Virginia Valley Vipers staved off a third-quarter comeback from the York Mighty Ants of Pennsylvania Sunday night to notch their third victory.
The Vipers (3-6) handily beat the Ants (2-7) with a score of 110 to 96. Forward Chris Chaney scored 23 points to lead the team. Big defensive plays from center Justin Brown as well as steals from guards James “Amp” Williams and Rze Culbreath made for an exciting game at the James R. Wilkins Athletics and Events Center. With those steals, Culbreath returned to his spot leading the league in steals.
The Vipers established an early 22-point lead in the first quarter, but the Mighty Ants weren’t ready to go marching home. The Ants managed to close the gap to a mere five points, ending the first half at 46-41 Vipers. After the half, the Vipers put their foot on the gas and didn’t let up until the final buzzer, widening their lead to as much as a 20-points that the Ants couldn’t overcome.
The Vipers earned some much-deserved rest with a bye weekend, but they return to the court on Saturday, April 15th at 7 pm to host the Tri-State Admirals (1-6).
